SENSOJI and the SANJA MATSURI

We would like to introduce Asakusa Sensoji and its festival of the month May.

Sensōji, also known as Asakusa Kannon Temple is a Buddhist Temple located in Asakusa. It is one of the Tokyo’s most colorful,

popular and oldest Temple with a history of nearly 1400 years. It was bult in 645 for the goddess of Kannon.

The Kaminarimon, is the out gate of it and the symbol of Asakusa and the city of Tokyo.

Nakamise(shopping street of about 200 meters) leads from the outer gate to the temple’s second gate, the Hozomon.

Typical Japanese souvenirs such as yukata, folding fans and various traditional local snacks from the Asakusa area are sold.

Beyond the Hozomon Gate stands the temple’s main hall which is five storied Pagoda. The Asakusa shrine,

built in 1649 by Tokugawa Iemitsu, stands adjacent to the temple’s main building.

Various events are held throughout the year however the biggest of them is Sanja Matsuri held in May.

Sanja Matsuri is scheduled to held from May 17th to 19th.

It features about 100 portable shrines(mikoshi)in which Shinto deities are placed into and paraded about the streets to bring good fortunes to the local businesses and residents.

The focus is the three large mikoshi make their appearance on Sunday. Asakusa is packed with food stalls, festival games and a lively atmosphere of Japanese drums and flute.
